II. Professional Development Portfolio


The purpose of the Professional Development Portfolio is to identify and deliver training and learning offerings for the federal real property community across Canada. The learning outcomes of the Portfolio will be to provide a mechanism for real property professionals in the federal government to remain current on issues, methodologies and best practices applicable to government operations. It also provides a channel for industry to access government professionals and determine where and how their services might be applicable to government operations.


The Professional Development Portfolio shall:

  • Consult the federal real property community and other stakeholders to determine professional development needs;
  • Determine the sources of training and learning for the professional development needs based on existing programs;
  • Ensure that the learning and training offered through the National and Regional Workshops and through the information sessions fosters a high professional standard of real property management and exposes delegates to a wide range of new ideas, products and services. Learning outcomes will also address new real property policies and practices, legislative evolution and technological innovations; and,
  • Plan and stage the National Workshops, Regional Workshops and Information Sessions.


The Portfolio strives to fulfill its mandate through the following activities:

  • Work collaboratively with federal public sector real property departments to determine what offerings (courses, seminars, etc) might be available to meet overall professional development needs;
  • Establish linkages with the academic institutions, professional associations and industry to determine if there is potential for synergistic development of professional development offerings (workshops and information sessions);
  • Develop annual deliverables in support of the action items in the RPIC Strategic Plan which outline the planning, coordination and delivery of the professional development offerings across Canada;
  • Identify a chair and co-chair to lead the planning and organization of the professional development offerings. Either the chair or co-chair of the offering should be a Board Member.
  • Establish planning committees for each of the events that may include Board Directors, federal employees, regional counterparts, industry representatives and other volunteers who have an interest in the field of real property management;
  • Develop and manage an annual work plan as approved by the Board of Directors complete with scope, budget, timelines, and learning outcomes for each of the professional development offerings;
  • Maintain a calendar of professional development learning and training offerings on the RPIC website with detailed information on key events such as:
    • RPIC Real Property National Workshop
    • RPIC Federal Contaminated Sites National Workshop
    • RPIC Marine Infrastructure National Workshop
    • RPIC Sustainable Labs Regional Workshop
    • RPIC Federal Contaminated Sites Regional Workshop
    • RPIC Real Property Regional Workshop
    • RPIC Breakfast Speaker Series
    • RPIC Lunch and Learn
    • Regional Information Sessions; and,
  • Report to the Board of Directors through monthly updates on matters pertaining to the event.
